To undo a completed reminder on iPhone: open the list, tap ... → Show Completed, then tap the filled circle to uncheck it. If you tapped seconds ago, shake once when Shake to Undo is on.
If you fat-finger the circle on the bus, in a widget, or on a repeat task and panic when the line vanishes, this is for you.
What every guide says (and what they skip)
Apple Support, iMore, and every forum thread land on the same fix:
- Open the source list. Today is a Smart List. You need the real list name behind the task.
- Tap ... → Show Completed. Strikethrough lines appear below active tasks.
- Tap the filled circle. The checkmark empties. The task jumps back to your active list.
- Tap Hide Completed when you are done so the view stays clean.
That covers the easy case. Your takeaway: none of them tell you which branch to run when you cleared the list, completed from a widget, or killed tomorrow's repeat instance by mistake.
The UNCHECK Path: a decision tree in four branches
UNCHECK is not a mnemonic gimmick. Each letter is a fork based on how long ago you tapped and what happened after.
- U — Undo shake (0–5 seconds). If Shake to Undo is on (Settings → Accessibility → Touch), shake the phone once right after the bad tap. Tap Undo on the banner. This only works for the last action and only while Reminders is still open.
- N — Navigate to the source list. From Today, tap the task before it disappears, note the list name under the title, then open that list. Widget mistakes: open Reminders, find the same list manually.
- C — Circle tap via Show Completed. Tap ... → Show Completed. Find your task. Tap the filled circle once. It returns to the active section with no strikethrough.
- H — Hunt Recently Deleted. If you ran Clear on that list, the task is not in Show Completed anymore. Open sidebar → Recently Deleted → swipe left on the row → Recover. It lands back on the source list as an active task.
Your takeaway: seconds old = shake. Same day, not cleared = Show Completed. Cleared = Recently Deleted. Pick one branch and stop second-guessing.
Walkthrough: wrong tap on a daily "Take meds" reminder
You open Reminders at lunch. Under Today you see an empty circle next to "Take meds." You tap it. The line vanishes. You realize the filled circle you saw on your laptop was today's dose already done, and your phone just completed tomorrow's instance.
Branch 1 (too late to shake): Tap the back arrow. Open the Health list where the repeat lives. Tap ... → Show Completed. Two "Take meds" lines appear with strikethrough. One shows today's date, one shows tomorrow.
Branch 2 (uncheck the right one): Tap the filled circle on the tomorrow row only. The strikethrough disappears. Tomorrow's dose is active again. Today's completed row stays checked, which is correct.
Branch 3 (verify the repeat): Tap the restored task. Confirm the date field still says tomorrow at 8:00 AM. Tap ... → Hide Completed. Today view should show zero open "Take meds" lines until tonight's repeat generates the next one.
That three-minute audit beats rebuilding a repeat schedule from scratch.
Widget and notification mistakes
Completing from a home-screen widget skips the list view entirely. You cannot shake-undo a widget tap reliably. Jump straight to branch N: open Reminders, open the list pinned in the widget (long-press widget → Edit Widget → read the list name), then run Show Completed.
Lock-screen notifications work the same way. If you swiped and tapped Mark Completed on "Submit expense report," open the Work list, Show Completed, uncheck. Your takeaway: widgets and notifications complete tasks for real. Treat them like list taps, not previews.
Common mistakes (and the fix)
- Searching Today for a hidden task. Today hides completed items by default. The task is not deleted. Open the source list first.
- Unchecking every repeat instance. Daily and weekly repeats keep separate completed rows per date. Only uncheck the date you killed. Leave older completed rows alone.
- Running Clear while panicking. Clear deletes completed rows in bulk. Uncheck is surgical. Never tap Clear when you want one task back. If you already cleared, use Recently Deleted.
- Assuming iCloud lag means loss. Wait 30 seconds on Wi-Fi, pull to refresh on the list, then Show Completed again. Sync delay mimics data loss.
- Re-creating the task from memory. You lose the original notes, URL, and subtasks. Always try Show Completed or Recently Deleted before you retype.
Once you recover the task, run our CLEAR Rule for list hygiene on a schedule, not in a panic. CLEAR is for finished history. UNCHECK is for one wrong tap.
Where Divux fits
UNCHECK fixes a single mistake. The harder problem is scanning what still matters today without fat-finger completes.
Divux puts today's tasks, your calendar, and a focus timer on one screen with larger tap targets than the stock widget. Fewer accidental checks means fewer rescue missions.
Pair a clean Today view in Reminders with Divux for execution. Recover the task first, then time-box it so you finish it for real.
Frequently asked questions
Can you undo a completed reminder on iPhone?
Yes. Open the list, tap the three-dot menu, choose Show Completed, then tap the filled circle next to the task to uncheck it. If you just tapped by mistake, shake the phone once when Shake to Undo is enabled under Settings, Accessibility, Touch.
Where do completed reminders go on iPhone?
Checked tasks stay inside the same list but hide from view. Show Completed reveals them with strikethrough text. If you tapped Clear, those items move to Recently Deleted in the sidebar for up to 30 days before permanent deletion.
What if I completed a daily reminder by accident?
Open the source list, tap Show Completed, and uncheck the instance you killed. iOS may have already created the next day's occurrence. Compare dates on both lines before you hide completed items again.
Open Reminders now. Find the list where you last tapped too fast. Show Completed, uncheck one circle, then Hide Completed.
