A repeating reminder on the wrong weekday almost always copied the date from when you last completed it, not the day you want. Open the new card, set the due date back to your real weekday, then complete it on that day once.

If you check off chores early and watch the series drift toward weekends, this is for you.

What every guide says (table stakes)

Apple Support threads and the top how-to posts recycle the same fixes:

  • Turn Repeat off, then delete. Stops the loop. Does not explain why Tuesday became Thursday.
  • Update iOS and restart. Worth doing once. Does not fix an early checkmark you tapped last night.
  • Toggle Reminders in iCloud. Resets sync ghosts. Overkill when one card slid to the wrong weekday.

Your takeaway: those moves treat symptoms. Weekday drift needs a date fix before you nuke the series.

The ROLL Fix: Read, Open, Lock, Leave

ROLL is four steps. Run them on the card that already landed on the wrong day.

  1. R — Read the next date. Open Today or Scheduled. Tap the reminder. Note the weekday under the title. That is the anchor Reminders will copy forward.
  2. O — Open Repeat. Tap i → Repeat. Confirm it says Every Week or Custom. The label is fine. The due date is what slipped.
  3. L — Lock the weekday. Tap Date, scroll to your real day (Monday for trash, Friday for payroll), set Time if you use alerts, tap Done.
  4. L — Leave it until that day once. Do not complete early on this cycle. Check it off on the correct weekday so the next copy inherits the right anchor.

Your takeaway: edit the date before you complete again. One on-time finish resets the rhythm.

Walkthrough: trash night that slid from Thursday to Wednesday

Marcus set Take out bins for every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. He checked it off Wednesday after an early pickup. Thursday's card vanished. Wednesday next week showed up instead.

Step 1 — Read. He opens Scheduled, taps the line, and sees Wed, Oct 15, 7:00 PM. That Wednesday is the problem.

Step 2 — Open Repeat. Tap i. Repeat shows Every Week. Good rule, wrong date.

Step 3 — Lock. Tap Date → pick Thu, Oct 16 → confirm 7:00 PM → Done.

Step 4 — Leave. He leaves the card alone until Thursday evening, then taps the checkmark. Next week Scheduled shows Thursday again.

If he needs weekday-only repeats from the start, he should run the CADENCE Fork for custom repeat instead of bare Every Week.

Your takeaway: one honest Thursday completion beats three angry deletes.

Mistakes that keep the wrong day alive

Most drift comes from habit, not bugs.

  • Completing early every week. The checkmark timestamps the next copy from completion day. Snooze to the real day or edit the date before you tap complete.
  • Using Every Week for weekday habits. Every Week on a Monday card still fires on Monday even when you wanted Mon–Fri. Use Custom weekday circles. Our STOP Fork guide helps when you need to kill a loop entirely.
  • Snoozing across midnight. A Friday snooze to "tomorrow" on a weekly task can park Saturday as the new anchor. Use Edit on the date field instead of stacking snoozes.
  • Mixing defer and repeat. Moving a repeat with the date picker on Monday, then completing Sunday, stacks two different anchors. Pick one: either defer the single card or fix Repeat, not both in the same hour.

Your takeaway: early completes and lazy snoozes move anchors. Edit the calendar day on the card. When a pile of overdue repeats clogs Today, skim our Scheduled view guide before you edit dates one by one.

When it is sync, not ROLL

Rare cases look like weekday drift but are twins on different devices. If you already ran ROLL and the card still shows the wrong day on a second screen, treat it as sync before you delete the whole series.

  1. Zombie card. You fixed the date on iPhone. iPad still shows the old Wednesday. Open Reminders on each device after the edit, or run the iCloud toggle once.
  2. Calendar mirror. The same title lives in Calendar with a different repeat. Delete or fix the calendar copy. See our ALERT fork for double notifications.
  3. End Repeat ignored. A series past its end date that keeps spawning needs Repeat → Never then delete, not another date nudge.

Divux shows dated tasks beside your calendar so a slipped Thursday is obvious before it becomes a month of wrong Wednesdays. More workflows live on the Divux product page.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my repeating reminder move to a different day after I completed it?

Completing early schedules the next copy from the day you tapped the checkmark. Open the new card, tap the info button, set Date to the weekday you want, and complete on that day once so the series re-anchors.

Does Every Week mean the same calendar day on iPhone?

Yes. Every Week follows the due date on the card. Slide that date to Sunday and the next instance is another Sunday. For workweek habits, use Custom with weekday dots filled.

Should I reset iCloud when the repeat day is wrong?

Edit the next due date first and complete on schedule once. Reset Reminders sync only if the wrong day returns on every device after a clean ROLL pass.

Open Reminders, find one repeat sitting on the wrong weekday, run ROLL, and leave it until the real day before you check it off.
