Open your channel chat in a desktop browser, click the gear icon, choose Popout Chat, copy that tab's URL, then paste it into OBS under View → Docks → Custom Browser Docks. You get a Twitch chat panel beside your scenes without putting messages on stream.
This is for new Twitch streamers on OBS who can see chat on twitch.tv but lose it the moment the game goes fullscreen.
What most guides already cover
Search results all start the same way. Log into Twitch in Chrome or Firefox, open your channel, and expand chat. Click the gear below the message box. Pick Popout Chat. A narrow window opens with a URL like https://www.twitch.tv/popout/yourname/chat?popout=.
From there, guides split. Some tell you to add that URL as a Browser Source so chat appears on your broadcast. Others mention OBS docks but treat them as an afterthought. Streamlabs-focused posts swap in a widget URL instead of the raw Twitch popout.
All of that gets chat on screen somewhere. Few explain which option keeps chat off your gameplay capture when you only need to read it yourself.
Pick dock or on-stream before you paste the URL
Decide in one sentence:
- Gameplay on one monitor: use a Custom Browser Dock. Viewers never see the panel. You glance sideways while the game stays clean.
- Just Chatting or a talk show layout: use a Browser Source on the scene so chat is part of the show.
- Styled chat with alerts: use a Streamlabs Chat Box widget URL in a Browser Source instead of the raw Twitch popout.
Mixing them on the same scene is how chat ends up twice on stream and once in a dock you never look at.
Five-minute setup checklist
- Pop out chat. On twitch.tv/yourchannel, open chat, gear icon → Popout Chat. Leave that tab open.
- Copy the full URL from the address bar. It should include
/popout/and your channel name. - Open OBS Studio. Go to View → Docks → Custom Browser Docks.
- Name the dock (for example "Twitch Chat") and paste the URL. Click Apply.
- Drag the new dock to the right edge of OBS. Widen it until usernames and one line of text fit without horizontal scroll.
- Sign in inside the dock if Twitch shows a login wall. Refresh once after you authenticate.
- Start a short recording or bandwidth test. Glance at the dock every 30 seconds while you talk so you know the panel is visible at your desk height.
Walkthrough: Tuesday night Valorant unrated
Imagine you are about to queue unrated at 8:00 p.m. Your game capture fills the main OBS preview. Chat must not sit on top of the minimap.
In the browser on your streaming PC, open your channel chat and pop it out. Copy the URL. In OBS, create the Custom Browser Dock named "Twitch Chat" and paste the link. Dock it on the right, about 320 pixels wide.
In OBS, confirm your Game Capture source has no Browser Source layered above it. Chat lives only in the dock panel, not in Sources.
Start streaming or recording. Say out loud: "If chat asks about crosshair, I'll answer between rounds." When a real message appears, read the username once, answer in one sentence, then return to callouts.
If you are offline and want reps before anyone watches, put a phone on a stand beside the dock. Open StreamSim, pick the Twitch skin, and let messages scroll while you practice the same sideways glance. The dock holds real Twitch chat on stream night; the phone holds practice traffic tonight.
When you switch to Just Chatting later in the week, remove chat from the dock for that scene only. Add a Browser Source with either the same popout URL or a Streamlabs widget, sized 350 by 600 in the lower left of your face cam.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Blank dock after paste. OBS uses its own browser cookie jar. Log into Twitch inside the dock panel, not only in Chrome.
- Chat on stream during FPS games. You added a Browser Source when you wanted a dock. Delete the source from the gameplay scene; keep the dock.
- Popout on the wrong account. The URL is tied to the channel in the path. If you mod for a friend, pop out from their channel chat, not yours.
- Dock too narrow. Messages wrap and you read half a sentence. Drag the dock wider than you think; 300 pixels is a minimum, not a target.
- Setup without voice practice. A perfect dock does not stop the eight-second freeze when three messages land. Pair this with our guide on how to read chat while streaming so your eyes and your mouth stay in sync.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pop out Twitch chat on my phone?
Twitch only offers Popout Chat in desktop browsers. On iPhone, keep chat in the Twitch app on a second device, or rehearse glances with a practice feed beside your monitor while OBS stays on your PC.
Should Twitch chat be in an OBS dock or on stream?
Docks are for private reading during fullscreen games. Browser Sources belong on layouts where viewers should see chat. Pick one per scene so you are not duplicating messages.
Why is my OBS Twitch chat dock blank?
Sign in inside the dock, refresh, and confirm you pasted the popout URL from the address bar. The main channel page URL will not load chat inside OBS.
Pop out chat once, save the dock layout, and reuse it every stream. When the panel feels boring to set up, you are ready to worry about what you say in it, not where it lives.
