Reminders without a due date should not live in Today. Park them on a Someday list, or give them a real date. Run the SOMEDAY Fork when Today feels full but you never scheduled half the lines.
If you capture fast, hate empty dates, and open Today to a wall of mystery cards, this is for you.
What every guide says (and what they skip)
Apple Support and the usual tutorials agree on the basics:
- Today shows tasks due today plus overdue dated items.
- Scheduled shows anything with a date, not dateless captures.
- A Smart List with Date → No Date finds undated reminders across lists.
- On iOS 18, you can Edit Sections in Today and move Overdue below All-Day and Timed.
That last tip helps when yesterday's dated tasks bury today's work. It does not tell you where to put ideas you never meant to schedule. Your takeaway: overdue clutter and true Someday items need different fixes.
The SOMEDAY Fork: five branches in five minutes
SOMEDAY is a symptom sort you run inside Today once, then a weekly Smart List audit.
- Sort. Open Today. Note which section each suspect line sits in: Overdue, All-Day, or Timed.
- Open. Tap the card → i. If Date is off, it is dateless. If Date is on, it is dated, even when it feels "floating."
- Move. Long-press a dateless line → Move → your Someday list (create it once under Add List if you need it).
- Empty. For captures that should stay dateless, leave Date off and never flag them for Today. For ideas that need action, set Date and Time before you close the card.
- Yard. Add List → Smart List → Edit Filters → Date → No Date. Scan every Friday. Anything older than two weeks gets a date, a delete, or stays on Someday on purpose.
Your takeaway: Sort tells you which branch to use. Move and Yard keep dateless work off Today for good.
Walkthrough: fix a crowded Tuesday morning
Priya opens Today and sees twelve lines. Four say Overdue from last week. Three are All-Day for today. Five sit under a project list name she does not recognize.
Step 1: She taps Research summer camps → i. Date is off. That is Someday, not Today. She long-presses the card → Move → Someday.
Step 2: She opens Plan team offsite. Date is on, but three subtasks show in Today alone. Each subtask has its own due date from a template. She opens Book venue → i → clears Date so it stays under the parent until she is ready to schedule it.
Step 3: For the four Overdue lines she still wants, she either completes them or drags them in Scheduled to today with real times. She is not deleting dates; she is owning them.
Step 4: She creates Smart List No Date Audit with filter Date → No Date. Five strays appear outside Someday. She moves two to Someday and adds Friday 3:00 p.m. to Call dentist because that one needs a ping.
Today drops from twelve lines to five dated tasks she can actually finish.
When Today is still noisy after you move strays, run the five-minute TRIM sweep from our clean Reminders Today guide. SOMEDAY Fork is for dateless capture; TRIM is for dated overload.
Your takeaway: check i on every suspect card before you assume it belongs in Today.
Common mistakes (and the fix)
- Treating Overdue as "no date." Overdue means a date passed. Fix it with a new date, completion, or deferral, not a Someday move. Our defer tasks guide covers the midday Return Date ritual for dated work you are pushing.
- Leaving subtasks dated when the parent is not. Subtasks are independent. A dated subtask will keep popping into Today. Clear or align dates before you move the parent.
- Using Today as the inbox. New captures should land on your default list with Date off until you decide. See default list setup so quick adds stop landing in random lists.
- Building Someday without a Yard pass. A Someday list becomes a junk drawer. The No Date Smart List is the Friday trash patrol.
- Reordering sections but never moving tasks. iOS 18 lets you put Overdue at the bottom of Today. That helps visibility. It does not replace moving dateless ideas off Today entirely.
- Assuming sync dropped your date. If Date toggles off right after you set it, check Settings → Reminders accounts and set iPhone Date & Time to automatic before you blame Someday routing.
Your takeaway: overdue is dated work; Someday is intentionally dateless.
Where Divux fits
SOMEDAY Fork clears Today so you see real deadlines. Execution still needs calendar time for the dated lines you keep.
Divux puts today's tasks, your calendar, and a focus timer on one iPhone screen. After Yard pass Friday, open Divux and block twenty-five minutes on the one dated task you rescued from the Overdue pile.
That loop is what Divux is built for. Honest Someday parking in Reminders, honest blocks on your calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Should iPhone reminders without a due date appear in Today?
No. Today is for tasks due today and overdue items with a date. Truly dateless reminders belong in a normal list or a Someday list. If a line with no date shows in Today, you are usually looking at a subtask with a hidden date or a sync glitch.
How do I find all reminders with no date on iPhone?
Create a Smart List: Add List, choose Smart List, Edit Filters, Date, No Date. Match All if you add a list filter. That view is your weekly audit for strays before they clog capture again.
Why do subtasks show in Today when the parent has no date?
Subtasks are separate reminders. If any subtask has a due date, it appears in Today on that day even when the parent is undated. Open each subtask, tap i, and clear Date or align it with the parent before you move the group.
Open Reminders → Today now. Tap i on one card that feels out of place. If Date is off, move it to Someday before you close the app.
