Put place-based errands on location triggers, not clock times. In Apple Reminders, tap the reminder, open Details, turn on Location, and pick Arriving or Leaving. Cap yourself at three anchor spots so alerts stay reliable.

If you set "buy milk" for 9 a.m. and always ignore it because you are not at the store yet, this is for you.

What every guide says (and why it still fails)

Apple Support and the top how-to posts all cover the same steps: enable Location Services, open Reminders, tap the info button, toggle Location, choose Home or Custom, pick Arriving or Leaving. That is table stakes. You already know how to flip the switch.

What they skip is the part that makes location reminders useful in real life:

  • They let you geofence everything. Fifteen location triggers sounds smart until half of them never fire and your phone battery tanks.
  • They treat every store as its own spot. Target, Costco, and the post office each get a pin. You end up maintaining a map instead of running errands.
  • They ignore the Leaving trigger. "Grab the package from the front desk" matters when you walk out of work, not when you walk in.

The gap is a system, not a setting. You need three anchor spots and a rule for which errands belong on each.

The 3-Spot Map checklist

Instead of tagging every errand with its own geofence, set up exactly three location hubs. Everything place-based routes through one of them.

  1. Spot 1: Home Arrive. Tasks that only make sense when you walk in the door: bring in packages, start laundry, water plants.
  2. Spot 2: Work Leave. Tasks tied to walking out: drop off mail in the lobby, grab your lunch from the fridge, text your partner you are on the way.
  3. Spot 3: Store Custom. One pinned store you hit weekly (grocery, pharmacy, hardware). All shopping errands stack here as plain reminders with no extra location tags.

That is the whole map. Three geofences, unlimited errands underneath. If you need a second regular store, swap Spot 3 on Sunday during your weekly review, do not add a fourth pin.

For list structure underneath these hubs, our guide on organizing tasks by project on iPhone shows how to keep Home errands in a dedicated bucket.

Turn on permissions first (two minutes)

Location reminders fail silently when permissions are wrong. Run this checklist once before you create any geofence alerts.

  1. Open SettingsPrivacy & SecurityLocation Services. Make sure the master switch is on.
  2. Scroll to Reminders. Set access to While Using the App. Turn on Precise Location.
  3. Open Contacts, tap My Card, tap Edit, and add your home address. Siri and Reminders both pull "Home" from here.
  4. Add your work address the same way if you plan to use the Work Leave spot.

Skip this step and every fix later will feel random. Most "my reminder never fired" threads end here.

Build Spot 1: Home Arrive

Pick one real task you only remember after you unlock the front door. Example: "Bring in Amazon box from porch."

  1. Open Reminders and tap New Reminder.
  2. Type the task in plain words. No date, no time.
  3. Tap the Details button (the i icon on older iOS versions).
  4. Toggle Location on.
  5. Tap Home, then choose When Arriving.
  6. Tap Done twice to save.

Test it once by leaving home and coming back, or trust the setup and add two more home tasks without new location pins. They sit in your Home list as normal reminders. The geofence on Spot 1 is your anchor, not every chore.

Build Spot 2: Work Leave

Leaving triggers are underrated. You are already moving, already have your keys, already thinking about the commute.

Example task: "Drop expense receipt in HR tray."

  1. Create a new reminder with that exact text.
  2. Open DetailsLocationWork (or tap Custom and search your office address).
  3. Select When Leaving, not Arriving.
  4. Save and close.

Now when you walk out at 5:12 p.m., your phone nudges you before you hit the elevator. No 9 a.m. alert you swipe away during standup.

Build Spot 3: Store Custom

Pin one store you visit every week. For most people that is a grocery or pharmacy.

  1. Create a reminder: "Buy milk and eggs."
  2. Details → Location → Custom.
  3. Search the store name (example: "Trader Joe's on Main Street").
  4. Choose When Arriving. Drag the blue circle on the map if the lot is huge and you want a wider trigger zone.
  5. Tap Done.

Add "pick up prescription" and "return Amazon package" as normal reminders in the same Home or Errands list. Do not give each one its own geofence. You will be at Spot 3 soon enough, and you can scroll the list in the parking lot.

Want a voice shortcut? Say: "Hey Siri, remind me to buy cat food when I arrive at Costco." Siri creates the same location reminder. Still count it toward your one Store spot. If Costco is not your weekly store, save Siri for quick capture and move the task under Spot 3 manually.

Where Divux fits

Apple Reminders handles geofences well. It gets messy when a store errand also needs a calendar block, a focus timer, and a note with the coupon code.

Divux keeps tasks, calendar, notes, and timers on one iPhone screen. Park Spot 3 shopping items in your Home bucket, block thirty minutes on Saturday morning, and run a timer while you shop without hopping apps.

Location triggers stay in Reminders for now. Use Divux for the weekly plan and timed blocks. Use the 3-Spot Map for the three pins that actually need GPS.

Mistakes that kill location reminders

  • Geofencing every errand. More than three active location triggers and iOS starts dropping alerts. Stack errands under three hubs instead.
  • Using a date and a location on the same task. Pick one trigger. Place-based tasks should have no due time. Time-based tasks should have no geofence.
  • Forgetting Precise Location. Without it, "Arrive at Home" might mean your whole neighborhood. Alerts fire too early or not at all.
  • Wrong Arrive vs. Leave choice. Shopping is Arriving. Grabbing something on your way out is Leaving. Flip it and you will train yourself to ignore alerts.
  • No address in Contacts. "Home" and "Work" shortcuts depend on My Card. A missing address breaks Spot 1 and Spot 2 silently.

If alerts still fail after the checklist, open our guide on iPhone task reminders for the four-point alert audit (sound, Focus mode, and notification permissions).

Mini FAQ

Why are my iPhone location reminders not working?

Check Location Services, Reminders permission set to While Using the App, and Precise Location turned on. Confirm your home address lives in Contacts under My Card. If all three are correct and alerts still fail, delete extra geofences until only your three anchor spots remain.

Should I use Arriving or Leaving for store errands?

Arriving for anything you do inside the store: shopping, returns, pharmacy pickup. Leaving for tasks tied to walking out of a place: mail a letter when you leave work, take trash to the curb when you leave home. When in doubt, ask where your body needs to be when the task becomes possible.

How many location reminders should I have active?

Three anchor spots maximum: Home Arrive, Work Leave, and one weekly store. Add unlimited plain tasks under each hub without new location tags. Review on Sunday and swap the store pin if your errands shifted to a different part of town.

Set up Spot 1 tonight with one home task. Add Spot 3 tomorrow with your next grocery run. Delete any old timed reminders for errands that belong on the map instead.
