To delete a Reminders list on iPhone, empty it first or accept that every task in the list goes to Recently Deleted with the list. Swipe left on the list name and tap Delete, or open the list, tap ..., then Delete List.
If you are cleaning up old side projects, duplicate grocery lists, or a shared list nobody uses, this is for you.
What every guide says (table stakes)
Apple Support and the top search hits all land on the same two delete paths:
- From the sidebar. In the list view, swipe left on the list or group name, then tap Delete.
- Inside the list. Open the list, tap ..., then tap Delete List.
Both send the list and its reminders to Recently Deleted for 30 days. Your takeaway: delete is fast; recovery is slower than you think when you meant to keep the tasks.
The gap: delete is the last step, not the first tap
Guides rarely branch on what is still inside the list. The MOVE Fork picks the path before you swipe:
- Measure. Open the list and count open circles. Zero open tasks means you can delete now.
- Offload. If anything is open, bulk-select and move it to one winner list before delete.
- Vet. Check sharing, widgets, and Shortcuts that still point at the list name.
- Erase. Delete only when the shell shows zero open tasks and partners are warned.
When you are retiring two noisy lists into one, run FOLD to merge reminder lists first. MOVE is for killing a single list without dragging half your life into the trash. Your takeaway: measure before you erase.
Walkthrough: retire the old Side Gig list
Example: you still have Side Gig with four open tasks and a widget on your home screen.
- Open
Side Gig. Note the open count in the title bar. Four circles means you are on the Offload branch. - Pick a winner. You choose
Workas the list that stays. Tap ... → Select Reminders, tap the four open lines, tap Move, chooseWork. - Re-open
Side Gig. Only completed history should remain. If one open line is left, move it. Do not delete with a single open task unless you want it in Recently Deleted. - Fix the widget. Long-press the Reminders widget, tap Edit Widget, switch the list to
Workor Today, then open Reminders once. - Swipe delete. In the sidebar, swipe left on
Side Gig→ Delete. Confirm. The list lands in Recently Deleted for 30 days if you change your mind.
Personal deadlines that should never live on a shared list belong in Divux beside your calendar blocks after you move them. Read more on the Divux product page.
Your takeaway: move tasks, fix the widget, then delete the shell.
Mistakes that cost you a week of tasks
These show up in support threads more than the swipe gesture itself:
- Deleting a shared list without a text. Your partner still sees the list until sync catches up, then it vanishes. Message the group before Erase.
- Confusing sections with lists. Swiping a section header deletes every reminder in that section but keeps the list. Lists live in the sidebar; sections live inside one list.
- Assuming delete equals complete. Open tasks do not move to your default list. They ride into Recently Deleted with the list.
- Skipping the widget refresh. The home screen keeps showing a dead list until you reselect it in Edit Widget.
If you already deleted and panicked, open Recently Deleted in the sidebar and recover the list within 30 days. Our recover deleted reminders guide walks the tap path when you need a single line back.
Your takeaway: shared lists and widgets need Vet, not just swipe.
Mini FAQ
Can I delete a list from iCloud on the web?
Yes, at icloud.com/reminders. The same warning applies: deleting the list deletes it on every device signed into that Apple Account. Offload tasks on iPhone first so you are not guessing what was inside.
Does deleting a list free up iCloud storage?
Reminders are tiny compared to photos. You delete lists to reduce noise in the sidebar, not to reclaim gigabytes. The win is fewer duplicate titles in Today, not disk space.
What if I only want to hide a list?
Pin lists you use daily and leave the rest unpinned. There is no hide toggle. If you never open it, move any straggler tasks out and run MOVE to Erase. Renaming is cheaper than delete when the list still earns its spot.
Open Reminders, pick the list you want gone, and run Measure on the open count before you swipe. Offload anything you still need, vet the widget, then Erase the empty shell.
