Tap the reminder, tap the info button, tap Date and Time, pick the new day, tap Done. That edits the due date on an existing iPhone reminder in four taps. Run the DATE Fork first so you edit instead of snooze, defer, or copy by mistake.
If you reschedule errands every week and Today still shows tasks from last month, this is for you.
What every guide says (and why your list still lies)
Apple Support and the top how-to posts all show the same edit screen:
- Tap the reminder. Open the card in any list or Today.
- Tap the info button. The small i circle below the title.
- Tap Date and Time. Pick Today, Tomorrow, or a custom calendar day. Toggle time on if you need an hour.
- Tap Done. The new date syncs to iPad and Mac on the same Apple ID.
Accurate. Also useless when you are standing in a parking lot deciding whether to snooze for an hour or move the whole task to Friday. Your takeaway: the edit screen is easy. Picking the right tool before you open it is not.
The DATE Fork: Snooze, Edit, Defer, or Copy
Before you touch Date and Time, ask one question: what is actually wrong?
- Snooze exit: the date is fine. You just cannot act in the next hour. Example: "call pharmacy" due today at 2:00 p.m., you are in a meeting. Swipe the notification → Snooze 1 hour. Due date stays today.
- Edit exit: the real deadline moved. Example: dentist rescheduled from Tuesday to October 14. Tap i → Date and Time → October 14 → Done. Same card, new day.
- Defer exit: the task is valid but should leave Today without a full reschedule. Example: three flagged items and this one can wait until Thursday. Use the midday Return Date ritual from our defer tasks guide. Edit is for a real calendar change. Defer is for Today clutter.
- Copy exit: the task repeats and you only want one instance moved. Example: weekly trash reminder auto-spawns every Thursday. You are traveling and need a one-off Friday pickup. Do not edit the parent. Use the COPY Loop from our duplicate reminder guide instead.
Your takeaway: alert timing = Snooze. New deadline = Edit. Today noise = Defer. Repeating one-off = Copy.
Walkthrough: move a vet appointment without ghost repeats
Priya has "Refill flea meds" due Tuesday. The vet texts: come back October 14 instead. The reminder has no Repeat toggle. Edit is the right exit.
Step 1: Open Reminders → Home list → tap "Refill flea meds."
Step 2: Tap the i button under the title.
Step 3: Tap Date and Time → scroll to October 14 → leave time at 10:00 a.m. (when the clinic opens).
Step 4: Tap Done twice to close the panels. The task leaves Today and lands on Scheduled for October 14.
Total time: under twenty seconds. No duplicate line. No accidental weekly repeat.
If Priya had set Repeat → Every 6 months on this line, Edit could shift the whole series. She would exit to Copy instead: paste the title into a new reminder, date October 14, Repeat off, complete the old line.
Your takeaway: plain tasks get Edit. Repeating parents get Copy.
Fix the time without moving the deadline
Sometimes the date is right and only the ping is wrong. That is not a DATE Fork Edit. That is a time fix inside the same screen.
Open i → Date and Time → toggle Time on → set 2:30 p.m. instead of the default 9:00 a.m. all-day trap. Our due date vs. reminder guide walks through the Deadline-Work-Ping rule when you first create tasks. This edit pass is for cards that already exist.
Quick comparison before you save:
- Move the calendar day: change the date picker. Task jumps to another day in Scheduled.
- Move only the alert: keep the date, change the time toggle. Task stays on the same due day.
- Silence until you open the app: turn Time off, leave Date on. No ping, still visible on that day.
Your takeaway: date picker moves the deadline. Time toggle moves the buzz.
Common mistakes (and the fix)
- Snoozing when the deadline actually moved. Snooze hides the alert for an hour. Tuesday's overdue task still shows red on Today tomorrow. Fix: Edit the date to the real day.
- Editing a repeating parent for a one-off change. You wanted trash pickup moved once. Now every Thursday shifted. Fix: COPY Loop with Repeat off on the new line.
- Changing the date but leaving a stale time. You moved "DMV visit" to Saturday but the 9:00 a.m. ping still fires while you are asleep. Fix: set Time to 9:15 a.m. Saturday, when you actually leave.
- Deferring when you mean reschedule. Defer pushes clutter off Today. It does not replace a firm appointment change. Fix: Edit for real calendar moves.
- Forgetting Early Reminder after a date move. You shifted a deadline but the 1-day-early heads-up still fires on the old day. Reopen i → Early Reminder → confirm it still matches.
- Editing on iPhone when you need a series exception. Some repeat chains are easier to split on Mac. On iPhone, Copy plus complete old line is the honest path.
Your takeaway: match the symptom to the exit before you tap Snooze out of habit.
Where Divux fits
Reminders handles date edits fine. The friction is seeing which moved tasks still need a work block today.
Divux puts today's tasks, your calendar, and a focus timer on one iPhone screen. Edit the date in Reminders, then open Divux to block thirty minutes on the new day before another meeting eats the slot.
That single-screen loop is what Divux is built for. One honest due date, one place to execute it.
Frequently asked questions
How do you change the date on an existing iPhone reminder?
Open Reminders, tap the task, tap the info button, then tap Date and Time. Pick a new day or toggle time on or off. Tap Done. The new date syncs across your Apple devices. Use Edit in the DATE Fork when the due date itself is wrong, not just today's alert.
What is the difference between snooze and changing the reminder date?
Snooze pushes the next alert forward by minutes or hours but often keeps the original due date on the card. Editing the date changes when the task appears in Today and Scheduled. Snooze is for I cannot do this right now. Edit is for the real deadline moved to another day.
Will changing the date on a repeating reminder break the schedule?
Editing one instance of a repeating reminder can shift the whole series anchor on some iOS versions. If you only need a one-off skip or move, use the DATE Fork Copy exit instead of Edit. Clone the task with a new date, leave Repeat off, and complete the old line.
Open Reminders now. Find one task sitting on the wrong day. Run the DATE Fork. Pick Edit, not Snooze, if the deadline really moved.
